Volume Converter
Free volume converter between metric (mL, L, m³) and US / UK customary (fl oz, cup, pint, quart, gallon). Includes US tablespoons and teaspoons. Runs in your browser.
Pick a “from” unit, a “to” unit, and a value. Converts between metric and US / UK customary volumes.
Routes through litres
Every unit has an exact factor in litres; everything goes via L.
| Unit | In litres |
|---|---|
| 1 mL | 0.001 L |
| 1 L | 1 L |
| 1 m³ | 1,000 L |
| 1 tsp (US) | 0.00492892159375 L |
| 1 tbsp (US) | 0.01478676478125 L |
| 1 fl oz (US) | 0.0295735296875 L |
| 1 cup (US) | 0.2365882365 L |
| 1 pt (US) | 0.473176473 L |
| 1 qt (US) | 0.946352946 L |
| 1 gal (US) | 3.785411784 L |
| 1 fl oz (UK) | 0.0284130625 L |
| 1 gal (UK) | 4.54609 L |
US ≠ UK gallons (and pints, and ounces)
The US gallon (3.785 L) is about 17% smaller than the UK / imperial gallon (4.546 L). UK pints and ounces are correspondingly larger than US ones. Always check which system a recipe or fuel-economy figure is using.
”cc” is “cm³” is “mL”
The medical “cc” (cubic centimetre), the chemistry “cm³” and the kitchen mL are all the same volume by definition.

Frequently asked questions
Why does this distinguish US and UK gallons?
Because they're really different sizes. 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L (exact). 1 UK / imperial gallon = 4.54609 L (exact). The US gallon is about 17% smaller — a real source of recipe and fuel-economy confusion.
What about tablespoons and teaspoons outside the US?
Metric kitchens use a standard 15 mL tablespoon and 5 mL teaspoon. The US versions are slightly different — 14.7868 mL and 4.9289 mL respectively. Close enough for cooking; not the same on paper. Both UK and Australian kitchens have their own conventions too.
Why not include cubic inches and cubic feet?
We can — they're just additional fixed factors. Until there's demand, we've kept the list to the units most people actually use. The arithmetic is the same: each unit's factor in litres, route everything through L.
What's a \"cubic centimetre\" (cc)?
Identical to a millilitre. 1 cm³ = 1 mL = 0.001 L by definition. "cc" survives mostly in medical and automotive contexts.
How precise are the conversions?
The factors above are all exact by definition. Internal arithmetic is full double-precision (~15 significant digits). Display shows up to ten fractional digits with trailing zeros stripped.
